Early travellers in the middle ages would have come upon a bright white stone church about a mile along the London to Essex Road. Known by its Latin name ‘Alba Capella’ it was soon changed to its English version as The white Chapel once settlers began to overspill from the city itself. The name stuck and Whitechapel was born. With such a long and lasting history, it is a shame that only the most notorious incidents are remembered. Whitechapel was indeed the location for the 1888 Jack the Ripper murders and also the setting for the fatal shooting in the 20th century at the Blind beggar pub however there is so much more to Whitechapel than its historic crimes. Our Whitechapel escorts are certainly one of the plus points as well as the vibrant multi-cultural community and accessibility to central London and the Docklands area.
Whitechapel’s position outside of the London city walls made it an attractive location for the less desirable activities and industries. The Whitechapel bell foundry which made both Big Ben in London and the Liberty bell in Philadelphia was located here along with breweries, slaughterhouses and tanneries. The Whitechapel road itself boasted no less than 14 different coaching inns which were always full to bursting given the huge numbers of immigrants looking to settle in the city. By the mid-19th century, Whitechapel had taken on the look of a typical Dickensian London with poverty and overcrowding spilling out onto the streets. Dorset street was named ‘the worst street in London’ and that was before the Ripper murdered Mary Jane Kelly in her lodgings there! The area still remains much the same although much less dangerous. Indeed, many of our own Whitechapel escorts have enjoyed the regular walking tours that take place here in the summer months which have become tourist attractions in their own right.
As well as the notoriety, there was plenty of good. The Royal London hospital was built in 1757 to fill the void in the east London area. St Bart’s, Guy’s, St Thomas’, St George’s and Westminster hospitals all served other parts of the city yet there was nothing in the east end, arguably the area most in need. The Royal London was the founder of Medical school. Doctors in training previously had to pay privately for their individual tuition however The Royal London started the first medical school with scholarships and bursaries available to those who showed promise rather than wealthy parentage. The most famous patient at the Royal London hospital was John Merrick ‘the elephant man’. He spent the last few years of his life here under the care of doctor Frederick Treves before succumbing to his deformities at the age of just 27. Luckily none of our beautiful Whitechapel escorts have ever required a stay in the Royal London however it dominated the area as a well-known landmark and if you decide to enjoy a date in the area it might be the easiest place to meet.
Whitechapel today is much less notorious than its past. It remains a residential area just outside the city with all the amenities one would expect. Converted warehouses make for excellent, modern loft style living and our escorts in Whitechapel are the ideal companions for those new city inhabitants. Dining out provides endless culinary options and much like our escorts Whitechapel galleries, it simply depends on your personal taste!
